Exercise, Homecoming, and OU-CU

I’ve continued with the current exercise plan to focus on swimming. I took Monday off (too much English Premier League with Eric on Sunday.) On Tuesday I swam 2500 yards, Wednesday was 2250, Thursday was a 45 minute bike ride, and this morning was a 2200 yard swim.

Amanda’s Volleyball team had games Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and they went 1-2. Tonight is the Heritage Homecoming football game and Amanda and Becca are going to the dance Saturday night.

Brittany and Danielle are going to the Oklahoma vs. Colorado football game on Saturday in Boulder. They will be wearing Crimson and Cream.

I got up early Sunday morning and began my 25 mile bike ride at 5:45am, before the sunrise. I didn’t encounter any traffic along the Highline Canal trail and managed to snap this shot at the top of the Chatfield dam at sunrise. I hurried home and had a quick shower.

Then I was off to the British Bulldog Pub in downtown Denver with Eric to watch the Manchester United vs. Chelsea English Premier League match.

It was a lively crowd of mostly Man U fans. Eric and I had a traditional English Breakfast, and of course a few pints.

I think the Bulldog is a dive, but the atmosphere is pretty cool. My favorite aspect is the high-backed booths with hand-painted countryside scenes painted on the panels.

The game was pretty good, although I think the referee was paid off in favor of Man U. The crowd went nuts when they scored their first goal of the match enroute to a 2-0 win.

We had a great time, and Eric really loves his English football, and gets along well with his mates. I think he wants to be a full time hooligan.

Football Friday

Some days things just work out and you get to enjoy your favorite past time with a mega dose.

The rivalry game between Heritage and Arapahoe was moved to 4pm to cut down on some student extra-curricular activity. This gave me a chance to squeeze in one half of 5A football.

Heritage has been much maligned in recent years, with fewer students going out for the team, and parents calling for the coach’s job. They have a good thing going this year and took it to Arapahoe in the first half, scoring four touchdowns to open an insurmountable 26-7 lead in-route to a 43-13 win.

This is what an offense and defense looks like in a 5A 11 man football game. Heritage in white, Arapahoe in black and gold.

It was now 5:30 pm and I was off to Deer Trail, Colorado to see the 6-Man game between the Deer Trail Eagles and the defending State Champion Idalia Wolves.

Oklahoma played a rare Friday night game against the in-state squad at Tulsa. I have Sirius radio in the Durango, so on my drive out to Deer Trail, some 65 miles from home, I listened to the pre-game and part of the 1st quarter.

On Oklahoma’s first possession, they drove the ball smartly to the Tulsa five yard line, where upon they committed two mistakes. First, an offensive lineman was flagged for a 15 yard personal foul, and then on the next play Sam Bradford threw an interception. Tulsa went the other way and scored a touchdown on their first possession, 7-0 Golden Hurricanes.

After trading possessions on a punt by Oklahoma and a turnover on downs by Tulsa, Oklahoma finally got going with a 8 play, 72 yard drive and a touchdown to tie the score at 7-7.

Time for some 6-man football.

6-man football is a lot of fun to watch. It’s a full contact track meet. The field is 80 yards instead of 100. Teams need to get 15 yards for a first down. Kicking an extra-point is worth 2 points. These are the main rule differences between 6-man and typical 11-man football.

Compare and contrast the photo above with the photo below.
dsc00356.jpg
Idalia is in white, playing defense of the left. Deer Trail is in red, on offense on the left. The quarterback is under center, standing sideways. He’ll take the snap and either toss it back to the kid who looks like he’s ready to punt, or he’ll throw a quick pass out to number 12.

Deer Trail ran this formation for the entire 1st half and their deep back had a very strong arm. He over threw two receivers early in the game that could have easily been touchdowns. Later he completed intermediate length passes over the middle, but the drives eventually stalled on incompletions. The deep back for Deer Trail was taken off the field on a stretcher and ambulance right before the first half ended after being tackled by an illegal facemask grab, which the referees missed. I’m not sure how badly the kid was injured.

Another unusual thing about 6-man football is the fact that spectators park their cars right on the sidelines. They either sit in their cars, or the pullout the lawnchairs. Check this out.

Meanwhile, Idalia runs a pretty plain offense. It’s like an I-formation, but with only three linemen. They just line up and come right at you, hoping to out-muscle you, then out-run you. They are pretty effective, with state championships in ‘98, ‘00, ‘01, ‘03, ‘05, and ‘06. They were also runners-up in ‘99 and ‘02.

Here they are running a single back formation while going for it on 4th and one.

Notice the Deer Trail defensive formation. They are all standing up, with two defensive lineman, three linebackers, and one safety. I think Idalia ran a hand off to the pulling guard play in which the quarterback handed the ball to the guard and he rumbled for five yards and the first down.

They opened up a 44-0 lead in the first half, then played their 2nd and 3rd stringers made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores in the second half and won comfortably, 50-6.

I got back in the car and headed for home at a little before 9pm.

Oklahoma was now up on Tulsa 42-21 in the fourth quarter. But the game and the scoring wasn’t over. The Sooners scored three more times - on a 1 play, 40 yard drive, on a 4 play, 29 yard drive, and finally on a on a 5 play, 47 yard drive to make the final score 62-21. Getting the ball in the opponents territory on three straight possessions makes the going pretty easy.

I got home at about 10:15.

And I got up at 5am, went to the gym, and swam a 2000 yard workout this morning.

What was yesterday

Being at work was a chore yesterday. I suffered throughout the day with leg aches, head ache and mild nausea. I had to take a ride around the place several times for fresh air.

I met Danielle at her school to resolve some text book issues, and we had a brief conversation about things wrong with the world. While I was there Brittany emailed this photo of her aquarium.

Went to Amanda’s volleyball game. They won 2-0. They are 4-1 on the season. I had a bag of popcorn and some nachos for dinner from the snack bar.

Boomer and I called my Dad to wish him a happy 77th birthday. It’s always good to talk to my dad.

Gave Boomer a bath and then we watched an episode of our favorite show together (Jakers! The Adventures of Piggly Winks.) I put him to bed around 8:45 and then I passed out for some much needed recuperative sleep.

Rock the House

I have always enjoyed listening to music. I have always enjoyed listening to music as loud as possible. I have always enjoyed teaching my children to listen to music, and to listen loudly. Because of some audio deficiencies, I have been recently concerned about my inability to expose Boomer to this favorite hobby of mine. I am worried that his older siblings would reminisce about the good old days when Dad would rock the house. I’m worried that Boomer wouldn’t have any idea what rocking the house is all about.

So I took a small step towards remedying this concern by holding an impromptu dance party - air guitar demonstration in the kitchen last night by playing a few discs on the small (and completely inappropriate for the task) stereo mounted under the cabinets. I think I blew the speakers. But oh was it grand! We began with a set of Stevie Ray Vaughn, worked our way through a bunch of Led Zeppelin, and closed the show with a Drops of Jupiter sing along. Boomer demonstrated that he is a complete natural – he dances, moves twirls, spins and bounces with the best of us. It made me feel great.

Now what we need to do is get some truly qualified stereophonic equipment and make these sessions a more frequent occurrence.

Happy 77th Birthday Dad - I love you - BJ

Self Motivation

So I haven’t blogged in a week or so (duh.) I’ve done the typical activity that you’ve been reading about – I’ve exercised (swim, bike, run,) Amanda’s volleyball team has played well (3-1 in their last 4 matches, plus an undefeated run at a 4 team round robin tournament,) I went to a high school football game between Class A defending State Champions Akron and local Denver Lutheran (I went to the game because Akron runs the single wing offense,) Oklahoma beat Utah State, I watched a great movie (Stranger Than Fiction,) and everyone in the family is healthy.

If I were reading between the lines of my own blog, I’d say that I find the material I post pretty damn boring, lacking in creativity, and way too sparse in terms of content, activity, and life.

If this is true, why blog then?

I’m looking for an inventive way of chronicling my life and times, and blogging seems a natural vehicle, but isn’t there more to report on than exercise habits and volleyball?

What did Boomer do today that was interesting? How was that conversation with Brittany and Danielle about what political party would Jesus be associated with? Doesn’t Becca just make you laugh because of her attitude? Tami is still learning to make the prefect hash browns, and it is fun to watch her technique develop.

There just has to be a more interesting way to put these thoughts and occurrences down in my blog. I’m not sure I’ll ever get the hang of it, so expect to continue to read about how far I swim, how many times I summit the dam at Chatfield, and volleyball results.

But also keep you fingers crossed that I will eventually find my voice.

Smorgasbord

Lets see … where was I?

I swam the morning I left for Alabama - which was also Becca’s official 15th birthday … I did the Alabama business trip with no problems … I ran Thursday and Friday mornings … I bought Tami an Alabama sweatshirt and sweet hounds tooth hat … and as promised, an antagonizing Auburn one for myself … Oklahoma beat Miami (hung half a hundred on ‘em) as I got the first opportunity to fly my new OU Flag … Amanda’s volleyball team won a tournament on Saturday by going undefeated … I got up early Sunday morning to a nice sunrise and crisp air, and rode the 21.5 mile loop over the Chatfield dam … and swam again this morning before work.

Out of Town

I’m headed to Huntsville/Decatur, Alabama tomorrow and will return Friday evening. I have three non-business related things to accomplish. 1 - Run Thursday and Friday mornings. 2 - Buy Tami an Alabama sweatshirt (she was born and lived for a while in Tuscaloosa. Roll Tide!) And 3 - Buy an Auburn sweatshirt for myself to antagonize her. (War Eagle!)
Probably won’t post again until Saturday.

Oklahoma

The Sooners defeated North Texas 79-10 Saturday night. Anyone else from Texas want some?

A Taste of Colorado

Tim and Jeanne, and Tami and I took the Light Rail downtown for the Taste of Colorado Festival. Although warm temps and bright skies, we had a great time.

Here is Tami on her way to the train station. Happy, innit?’

The Kiss Slugbug is always great to see.

These three are the grounds around the state capitol and the city/county building.

Tim and Jeanne enjoying the fare.

A partially eaten Louisiana Hot Link, complete with sauerkraut.

Working that hot link … and washing it down.

Here is a nice shot of the State Capitol.

And finally, this dude, in front of Nike Town on the 16th Street Mall.
