Spring Break Part 1 (Carlsbad, NM)

Tami and I took the high school kids and Boomer to Carlsbad, NM for their spring break. We drove (580 miles) in the van.

We got to New Mexico, and stopped in Raton for gas and breakfast at Denny’s.

Tami getting some lips from Boomer.
Boomer thinks he’s pretty official, wearing his sheriff badge. (An Anglo-Saxon would call him the Shire Reeve.)

On the way to Carlsbad, it is almost impossible to avoid going through Roswell. What the alleged alien/UFO crash landing nearby in 1947 did was essentially ruin a perfectly good little town. The downtown area is overrun by alien shops, and some group of elected officials had to have given their approval for the street lights to be modified to look like this.

We were road weary at this point, so I decided we should stop and have a look around at some of the places. I apologize in advance for these pictures.

Amanda really can’t believe she’s in the UFO Museum and Research Center. (What’s with the horse plastered in newspaper clippings?)
And finally, Becca, Boomer, and Amanda look in on the alien autopsy.

It’s just so cheesy.

We finally made it to Carlsbad, checked into out hotel and went to dinner at Chili’s. Boomer liked it. Still in shock over Roswell, Becca’s not so sure, and Amanda’s all smiles.

We finished our long day by going over to the local Walmart, and put all the Oklahoma hats over the Texas hats - check it out.
